The existing wall was of a relatively light construction. It had failed due to the requirement to act as a retaining wall for which it had not been originally intended. The first stage is to dismantle the structure and sort the stones by size prior to reassembly. The situation can then be properly assessed and an appropriate method of consruction developed. The ground is then graded to form a stable structure and allow for a new construction. The new construction requires a great deal more material than had been dismantled. The most economic solution was to use concrete building blocks to the rear of the wall where it would not be seen. These were used in exactly the same way as any dry stone construction (no mortar). The structure also incorporated old car tyres backfilled with ballast all fronted with the original stone. The wall prior to receiving its coping. It is intended to build the ground level back to the full height of this wall resulting in a ha-ha effect. |
